[Elderhostel Programs] Sisters respond to the
needs
of the moment
Through many years of active ministry,
Sisters have served God's people in various areas of need. As they advance in
age, the Sisters continue to serve, whether in active ministry or in prayer
ministry. At Stella Niagara Education Park, the
retired Sisters assist in the lunchroom, in the library, and in the school
bookstore. First Communicants enjoy the support of Sisters as prayer partners.
They meet the children, pray for them as they prepare for the sacraments, and
often continue their friendships. Since 1987, the Sisters have warmly
welcomed refugees referred by VIVE in Buffalo. Sister Marie Altier, coordinator
for the refugee program, notes, "Many people take time in retirement to
travel and learn about different cultures, but I have had the opportunity to
learn about the world by hosting guest refugees." Various Sisters assist
families with language instruction or other tutoring. In addition, never did
children have such an array of loving and admiring grand- mothers!
