SS. Columba-Brigid
Montessori
Franciscans
collaborate with diocese
On September 22, 1999, the Diocese of
Buffalo opened i
ts first Catholic School in 42 years. SS. Columba-Brigid
Montessori School is an early childhood program for children ages 3 to 6.
Located in Buffalo's Ellicott District, an economically disadvantaged area, the
school is an extension of the Church's ministry in the city. In accord with
their mission to the poor and to the ministry of education, the Stella Niagara
Franciscans have
been involved in the project since its inception by giving financial support and
personnel to the project. Some striking similarities between the opening of SS.
Columba-Brigid Montessori and the arrival of the Sisters in Buffalo have been
noted. One hundred twenty-five years ago, the Sisters began their ministry at
St. Ann and St. Michael schools among children of various cultural backgrounds,
mainly from French, German, and English speaking homes. Today's population at
SS. Columba-Brigid Montessori represents the diverse ethnicity of the city of
Buffalo.
The program,
under the
direction of Sister Diane Bernbeck, has grown steadily. Beginning with 16
children and half-day sessions, the school now has over seventy children, a first-grade component, full-day sessions, and an option
for before and after school care. Together with a director of development and
planning, two Montessori trained lay teachers and three lay teacher assistants,
Sisters Mary DiLeone and Eileen Barrett serve in supportive roles. By providing a Montessori
education to these urban children, the program is giving them a foundation for
becoming successful independent learners throughout their lifetime.
