Deepening Our Knowledge of Islam

As an outcome of the 2004 General Chapter of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, held in Rome, Italy, sisters and associates of Holy Name Province have begun a study of Islam. We invite you to accompany us on our journey through readings and discussion.

As an international community, the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity gathered in Rome in October of 2004 for their General Chapter. Following their gathering the Sisters issued the following statement:

In this time of violence and war,

we are women of peace and hope.

Contemplating our good and

we, from diverse cultures and continents,

affirm a planetary vision to live

as sisters and brothers in one God,

caring for all of life as sacred.

Faithful to our heritage, we take risks to

Go where the Spirit is sending us.

CORPORATE COMMITMENT
TO PEACE

The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity gathered June 28, 2003 - July 1, 2003 at Stella Niagara, NY and discussed ways they could make a more visible corporate commitment to peace.

The Provincial Council, the governing body of the Sisters, has been empowered to financially support the work of Franciscans International and Pax Christi USA and each Sister and associate of the community has been encouraged to do the same.

The leadership may endorse documents  for peace written by Franciscans International, Pax Christi USA, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, the Franciscan Federation and/or the other provinces of the Sisters of St. Francis throughout the world. To spread this message, materials on peace will be included in the various publications of the Congregation.

Sisters and associates will make personal commitments to working for peace in their ministries. The leadership of the sponsored institutions of the Sisters will be challenged to implement this commitment.

We invite you to light a candle and pray with us the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light, and

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive'

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

We wish you peace and all good,

Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity

Holy Name Province, Stella Niagara, New York
